Maximilian Sunflower

Plant photo of: Helianthus maximilianii
Information by: PlantMaster        Photographer: Betsy Thompson

Description

This upright sunflower has beautiful yellow flowers with a black center, appearing in late summer. This attractive perennial may reach 10' tall and 4' wide. Leaves are gray-green, up to 6" long and are sometimes folded lengthwise. This plant loves full sun with well draining soil. It is not fussy about soil type. Plants can become drought tolerant when established. Birds and butterflies love the flowers. May naturalize. Found along roads, bluffs, prairies and limestone areas. Taller plants may need to be staked.
